  1. I must not read Matthew’s stories at work.

Snarfing water onto my keyboard is bad.

Snarfing water onto my keyboard is bad, especially when the managing partner of the firm is walking by.

    Fuego! Fuego! LMAO!

  2. Yet another reason for activists to rally around the owls:
“Increase foreign aid for education and buy these children a kickball. Do it for the owls.”

  3. That was absolutely the BEST story about someone nearly burning down a latrine in Bolivia I’ve ever read.

What I think, though, is that there’s one kid down there who grew up understanding: don’t touch dead birds of the night. It’ll start fires, which is very bad for the environment.

  4. wasn’t the bird of night already dead though? i mean your not going so far as to say the kids, sans US funds, went out and killed the night bird, eh?

  5. That story was so hilarious it actually hurt to read it. Whenever I gasp with laughter my husband always wants me to read what I’m reading to him. I could barely choke the sentences out I was laughing so hard.

People don’t realize the need for comic relief in developing countries! I can’t think of a better use for Peace Corps volunteers than to make Americans look like charming bumblers.

This reminds me of the time when my husband and I were hanging out with some Peace Corps volunteers in Guatemala. We visited their school and when we turned our backs the girls were ‘curling’ their hair with a hanger they stuck into a trash fire and they boys were trying to shock themselves with a used battery. So don’t feel bad–it’s not just you.

    Please–consider writing a book!

  6. Owl in Spanish is buho.

But I think ‘bird of the night’ is so much more lyrical, don’t you?

  7. Brilliant. Your Peace Corps experience continues to benefit the world: I no longer feel so traumatized about my own first teaching experience.

  8. OH! My! GOD!!!

This is hysterically funny. Moreso to me because:

My partner is from Chile, and his mother speaks NO english. I speak remedial spanish, so I end up asking about and for things in a very roundabout way. =)

Tip of the hat to Stacey for sending me here, too.

  9. Whenever I panic, “save the latrine” is my first thought as well…
