I’ll be on The Works this evening, talking about the rising prominence of parenting blogs. The show airs tonight 8:00 on 94.9, KUOW, or soon you will be able to listen to the audio online here.
Here are the people, sites, and articles we discuss:
- Heather Armstrong of Dooce
- Ben MacNeill of The Trixie Update
- Mrs. Kennedy of Fussy
- The Story About The Baby
- Daddy Types
- The Zero Boss.
- My posts about my son (including the one where I drop the baby).
- The New York Times: “Mommy (and Me)“
- Time Magazine: “The New Family Album“
And I’m sure dy readers will be happy to mention their favorite parenting blogs in the comments.
Awesome, Matt – and thanks for the mention. I’ll make sure to listen.
This is a parenting blog? Who knew? I thought it was a lighthearted take on the foibles of everyday life in general.
And The Trixie Update is a big tease, man. I’ve been waiting for TrixieTracker since before my daughter was born.
I adore http://daddyzine.typepad.com
I think Dad Gone Mad (www.dadgonemad.com) is hilarious.
Parenting in NYC as told by Doug at http://laidoffdad.typepad.com/lod/ – although, he’s not “laid-off” anymore.
In flagrant self-promotion, I kind of like my own blog, when I’m not wallowing in self absorption.

Yea! It’s so fun to listen to this!
One of my favorites is http://www.crazyus.com/
Thanks for the mention, Mojo. Though I prefer to be described as “between layoffs.”
oh no, I KNEW I shouldn’t have made that crack about the [not] annoying [at all, just a big silly misunderstanding, really funny if you think about it, right? right?] plastic toy.
It came from The Queen’s parents, didn’t it? I am so sorry. Actually, I’d like to buy one. No, two.
Oh– And I forgot to recommend Finslippy.
I’m too worn out dealing with my kids to read parenting blogs…thekeez
mimi smartypants is my favorite blogger who talks about her kid… though it is not a “parenting blog” per se, but it is great (cool, hilarious, witty, great!), and she often tells stories about Nora. http://smartypants.diaryland.com
Don’t forget: http://www.icallherjohn.blogspot.com
“Diary of a Lesbian Step-Mother”
Thank you for providing a much more interesting and well-balanced discussion of parent blogging than did the Times. I found the their article to be a tad condescending and very limited. After reading it, I commented on my own blog that I am surprised that they couldn’t find people like myself who simply like to write and who blog primarily as a way of keeping friends and family up-to-date.
As you mentioned, my blog ends up being 50% my son and 50% what I think think about him.

I can’t believe you said “personal antidote” on the show! Cracked me right up.
Thanks, man.
I’ve been enjoying Kitschenette: Life in the Swiss Lane, by an Australian mom who is raising her two little ones in Switzerland (with her Swiss hubby).
And of course, there’s my own blog, which is prolly 50% about my crazy little vegan family unit, and 50% random distractions.
I enjoy “http://daddychip.blogspot.com” It’s a good mix of issues, observations and humor. Of course then, there’s mine “http://eccentricfather.blogspot.com” but Chip’s is a lot better.
I really enjoyed listening to the piece this morning as I got ready for work. I started our parenting blog a little bit before Fuller was born for the main purpose of keeping our friends and family in the loop of how Fuller is doing. We have no family in this area, so it has helped others feel like they know how Fuller is doing. And our (almost) daily pictures of Fuller keep their eyes on him as well.
Thank you for mentioning me and my book! Much appreciated!

My faves are:

and, a shout out for myself:
A Family Runs Through It
I guess it’s too late for it to make any difference, but I love http://snowdeal.org/section/ex_machina/. The earlier posts are more exciting than the ones right now, but the pictures are still cute, and the updates are still consistent. It’s also great to see the interaction via postcard between the audience of the blog and the author, and the use of Flickr.
My favorite thus far is:

very bhuddist.
