I was in the car this evening listening to 103.7 The Mountain, and they played a song so funny that it had me laughing out loud.
I later checked their website for info on the song, but the track was omitted from the playlist. So I sent an email to Marty Riemer, The Mountain DJ who had played it. Not only did Riemer write back almost immediately (it wasn’t even during his shift), but after informing me that the song in question was unavailable on CD he even went through the trouble of creating and sending me a MP3 of the performance. Whatta great guy!
The song is “Business Time” by a group called “Flight of the Conchords,” who describe themselves as “New Zealand’s 4th most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo.” They don’t appear to have an official website, but a comprehensive fan site can be found here.
And without further ado:
This was taken from a live recording of FotC playing at the Montreal Comedy Festival. The music starts at :55, but the preamble is funny too. More clips from these guys can be found at http://www.whatthefolk.net/soundandvision.htm, and a CD of their stuff (but lacking “Business Time,” alas) can be purchased here.
And while I’m heaping praise on 103.7, may I point out that one of my favorite programs, “The Chill Side of the Mountain,” which used to air only on Sunday evenings, is now broadcast five days a week. Here is the most recent playlist. Good stuff for Seattlites.
I started listening to that song in work. I guess I figured it would be OK because it had been on the radio. My volume was waaayyy up there and I COULD NOT figured out how the heck to turn it down. “Ohhhh yeeeeaaahhhh” was echoing through the nearby cubicles. Another embarassing moment brought to me by the yeti. :P
Nice to see Flight of the Conchords making waves overseas (at least from my perspective, given that I live in NZ and noone from NZ is famous anywhere except for Peter Jackson).
I have seen Flight of the Conchords perform live – they combine stand-up comedy with live music – and they were hilarious. Very well received at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and they have a big following here. Can’t remember the names of their other songs, but there are several which are equally funny.
The Conchords are in the process of putting their website together at http://www.conchords.co.nz (which is down at the moment — quelle embarassment!)
Business time is over too fast!
a great musical team indeed!
Check out http://whatthefolk.net/sounds/frodolive.mp3 – this is my fav of theirs!
One of the guys also has a cult following for a very small extra part he had in the Lord of the Rings (aka Bret aka Figwit).
“The Mountain” also has a station in Tucson. I like their music but was disappointed to find out that they’re owned by Clear Channel.
I just emailed the link to my boyfriend. Apparently Flight og the Concords have met us and have been spying on us in our moments of lust-crazed (Wednesday) nights. I think if I ever marry my boyfriend, this will have to be our wedding song.
I’ve always been a fan of Flight of the Conchords but could never find any of their stuff. Cheers.
Watch all the Kiwi’s come out of hibernation :)
Yes, FotC are excellent. I wish more of their material was promoted within NZ, let alone overseas. Very rarely one gets to hear them after midnight on a Saturday morning on National Radio, and even more rarely on Sunday afternoon.
Uninterestingly, my wife played violin in the same orchestra as Bret many years ago (I think) :)
I ordered their CD after seeing them on comedy central a few months ago. It’s a good CD, one that I would recommend.
“Hotties” is my personal favorite.
Now all we need is some more good keen kiwi music to make it out, like Deja Voodoo! ^_^
Aren’t FoTC just a less funny NZ version of Tripod (http://www.3pod.com.au)?
……. or maybe I’m just Australian and have finally caught onto trans-tasman bashing.
Thankyou so much!! I’d heard these guys a few times and particularly loved their LOTR spoof, but forgot their name and had no idea how to find them
We have the mountain here too! I love that station. And we actually have mountains to go with the music (Tucson Arizona). How about that?
Thanks so much for that! Laughing Out Loud, fo’ real.
Jack, The Mountain, soon all radio stations will have names, and those names will be the same in every market, from Sea to Shining Sea. I read somewhere that even so-called pirate radio stations are popping up that are Clear Channel financed.
kind of reminds me of a New Zealand version of Tenacious D.
That is friggin’ hysterical. Must. Have. More.
“Humans are dead” had me falling out of my chair laughing at the binary solo – also well worth checking out!
Great song.
If you like the “chill side of the mountain” mix, head over to this internet radio staion I found a awhile back. I’m sending the “Flight” over there asap.
They play a little of everything, really. Listeners rate the music and the higher the rating the more it gets played. Just a fun bunch of folks listening to music while we work and play on the internet.

Give em 20 minutes, see what ya think.
(and no, I don’t work for them, and no “Company” owns the staion.)
Oh, excellent, I love Business Time!! That was hilarious, thanks so much for sharing it with us. I love the station, too.
…they’re business socks. Snicker, snicker.
That chill side of the mountain thingy looks cool… i wish our radio didn’t SUCK.
I just listened to this with my husband and last night…..we experienced the exact same lustful night that they described. OOHHHH YYEaaHHH I was actually looking online for ways to spice up our love life….got bored, and needed a laugh…thanks.
I saw them play two years ago at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, it was by far the best event I went to. All you need to know is that they incorporated a dancing plastic flower into one of their songs. It was glorious. I hope hope hope they play again this year.
Found this classic link through that site…

Check it out. Actually, it’s horrible. But it made me laugh.
Awesome.
Just about the funniest thing I have heard in a long time!
Making love for 2….
making love for 2 minutes…
ohhhhhhhh yeahhhhh
:)
i am especially pleased with the fact that they’re so environmentally conscious.
i bet you they make love on compost heaps.
Where can I get some business socks? Thank you for providing this much neeeded service, I too heard it on Reimer’s show.
Thank you.
